Extending north into Canada, the Rockies form an Eastern landscape of jutting peaks, glacial lakes, and plunging valleys divided into four glorious national parks.

The abundance of slopes and snow makes North and Eastern Canada one of the best skiing destinations in the world.

Every region of the country has remarkable features, from the spectacular beauty of the Canadian Rockies to the rugged coastline of the Maritimes. Winter programs are becoming increasingly popular in Banff, Whistler, and northern Ontario. Hotels are being built or renovated across the country, most notably in Calgary, where business is booming. With the drop-off in tourism caused by the Asian economic crisis, prices are becoming more competitive in British Columbia.

With its undervalued dollar, Canada remains a travel bargain and you can put people in a five-star resort, and you get an incredible product. The problem is choosing what to do in the limited time you have there, as opposed to 'How are we going to fill the time'"

Proximity to the United States and a perception of Canada as a less likely target for terrorists has spurred a rebound of interest. "Not only is Canada's tourism industry recovering more rapidly than expected from September 11, but it's also generated a record amount in foreign spending in Canada in 2001," says Jim Watson, president and CEO of the Canadian Tourism Commission. Foreign visitors spent a record $16.3 billion in Canada in 2001, up 2.8 percent from 2000.

Air travel to Canada is convenient, but several cities are upgrading their facilities. Calgary's International Airport is in the middle of a 10-year expansion that will extend the Air Canada terminal, enlarge customs and immigration facilities, and add a runway, commercial space, parking, and taxiways. Edmonton is also upgrading its international airport; the facility has added a terminal and improved access roads. Under construction is a Central Hall that will connect the original terminals and add shopping, modernised security equipment, and upgraded foodservice options.

The hospitality infrastructure continues to grow, with 800 hotel rooms coming online in Montral, and Toronto will add a 305-room Ritz Carlton and a 250-room Delta Hotel and Conference Centre in 2003.

Case Study - Open text Corp

For Open Text Corp, Waterloo, Ontario, meetings aren't strictly business. Melissa Moore, former manager of corporate events for the software development company, says that all of the corporate programs included some incentive-type fun. Typical of that work/play balance was a program she put together for about 50 members of Open Text's information systems team at White Oaks Conference Resort & Spa in Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario.

The three-day event kicked off with a "Survivor"-style teambuilding event, followed by a welcome dinner at the resort, itself a treat. "It's not your typical banquet food," Moore says, "It goes above and beyond."

After an early meeting the second day, the group headed to a local winery for a tasting, tour, and dinner. On the final day, the morning meeting was followed by a choice of activities, including excursions to a butterfly conservatory, a casino, Niagara Falls, or Niagara-on-the-Lake. A farewell dinner at the resort capped the day.

When Anaheim, California.-based Eastwood Insurance was seeking an exotic location for an incentive program, consultant Rich Wise didn't think hard before suggesting Montral and Qubec City. The incentive was a six-night agenda that gave the 100 participants - mostly sales and support staff- a taste of Europe without the expense and jet lag.

The schedule revolved around Montral's annual Just for Laughs festival. It kicked off with a welcome dinner at the Marriott Chateau Champlain in Montral that featured a Circ du Soleil knockoff and a Celine Dion lookalike. The next day offered a city tour, jet boating and rafting, and a dinearound. A night at the festival capped the program.

"This was a young group, and Montral has a lot of dining, nightlife, sidewalk cafes and outdoor areas, so there is plenty for a young person to do," Wise says.

Next day, the Eastwood group boarded private cars on a first-class train to Qubec, a three-hour journey with entertainment along the way. Among the activities in Qubec were walking and coach tours of the city's historic sections and a farewell dinner at a sugar shack, a traditional log cabin at a maple syrup farm. "They serve family-style traditional Quebecois food," Wise says, "meaning everything has maple syrup in it." The room was set with picnic tables and a fire in the centre, and folk musicians provided entertainment. "It was a lot of fun and very casual," Wise recalls. The group "loved it; they got up and danced." Montral has . dining, nightlife, sidewalk cafes, and outdoor areas, so there is plenty to do."
