Almost
half of the country is above 1,200 meters (3,936 feet) altitude and is
eithe r used extensively or not at all. The Alps provides recreation and
relaxation for the urban population. Mountain railways have been
constructed, as well as sports centres, hotels and vacation homes.
People are proud of the steepest, highest, fastest and most punctual railways.
60 percent of tourism is
concentrated in the Alps and their foothills. This provides employment
in the mountain regions, but also causes ecological problems. 75 percent
of tourists arrive by private car.
The average height of the
mountains of the Swiss Alps is 1,700 meters (5,576 feet). The snow line
begins at 2,500 meters (8,200 feet). There are around 100 mountains,
which are 4,000 meters (13,120 feet) or higher and about 1,800 glaciers.
Zurich, the little big
city, is a world financial centre, centre of trade and industry,
shoppers' paradise and a cultural Mecca. It has parks, recreation areas,
upmarket stores and open-air markets. There are the cobbled streets of
the old part of town, a state-of-the-art urban rail system, theatres and
nightclubs, sculptures in the streets, and galleries and museums.
There is no better place
for a combined city and country event. Take a steamer tour of Lake
Zurich, explore the upper part of the canton, stroll on Uetliberg or
hike through Zurich's wine country. Nearby Winterthur (the Canton's
second largest city) was once a place of work, but today as a city of
world class museums, is well worth a visit.
Basel
Encounter
the best of modern art and architecture at every step. Savour cherries
fresh from nearby orchards and asparagus from the Alsace. Wave good-bye
as ships leave the shore. Let this unique, young-at-heart city kindle a
yearning for far away places within you, and revel in its rich history
and natural surroundings.
Art and culture alone do
not define Basel. Fairs and congresses, scientific institutes and world
commerce have also left their mark on the metropolis on the River Rhine,
at the heart of Europe. Nearby hills, forests, peaceful valleys and the
peaks of the Jura Mountains invite you to make an excursion, on foot or
by bike, by rail or by tram.
Switzerland offers great
variety from sophisticated cities to glitzy ski resorts, from crispy
cold winter mountains to sub-tropical summer lakes. There is also lots
to do, with skiing and sledding in the winter and kayaking, hot air
ballooning, white water rafting and paragliding in the summer.
Surprisingly such breath
taking beauty and cleanliness can be obtained at reasonable cost.
